Scleritis???

Posted in Group:

Scleritis is seriously affecting my life. I have been very sick with it and complications from meds because of it, and RA. But the eyes are my biggest nightmare.
I'm looking for anyone else suffering from SCLERITIS to talk with?
Thank you, Linda

Scleritis

Scleritis is a severe, destructive, chronic, painful, and potentially blinding inflammatory disease of the Conjunctiva, Sclera, and Episclera tissues, the tough, white tissue that covers about four-fifths of the outer eye. The front fifth, the clear Cornea, is where light passes through the eye, enabling us to see.

Symptoms
Redness and severe eye pain, which may radiate to adjacent areas, the forehead, cheek, or behind the eye. This is usually associated with light sensitivity, teary, and in some cases, reduced or poor vision. The affected eye often has a bluish hue or becomes an intense purple.

Hi Suzee,
This is a brief description of the disease, but kind of gives you an idea.
Thank you for the question. I hope all is well for you.
Linda :)

I just found out yesterday that I have, what the doctor calls, chronic episcleritis. I thought I was having bouts of pink eye, since October 2011! The pain and redness in my eye would switch from right, to left, to right, to left.. etc...

At first, because of the pain, eye pressure and sensitivity to light, I thought I needed new prescriptions so I went to get new glasses. Then the headaches started from the pain and pressure in my eye. Until yesterday when I couldn't take the eye pain and resulting headache. Plus, my eye looked swollen and scary red. So I saw my eye doctor again.

He basically told me it's an inflammatory disease and other than the eye drops, which I don't have yet (the pharmacy was closed) he has me following an anti-inflammatory diet - specifically the Paleo (aka Caveman or Primal Diet).

I also have PCOS and eczema - he says following the Paleo will help with all three. My PCP is on vacation but as soon as she's back, I will, of course, do a follow up with her as well.

How long have you had scleritis? And how have you been managing it?

-Jing
